Konnekt is pleased to welcome the hyper-inventive Needcompany with the support of Ictus for the Swiss premiere of a creation which, once again, revolutionises our relationship with concerts and performance. Songs of Disconnection - A Cycle of Songs explores the combination of music, words, sounds and movement in a complex and inventive fusion.

The composer and creator Maarten Seghers (singer) is accompanied by an ensemble composed of:
Aya Suzuki (vibraphone/percussion)
Simon Lenski (cello)
George van Dam (violin)
Michael Schmid (flute)


In order to completely disconnect the evening, Mathieu Baillif aka Ibn Al Rabin will present - in the second part - almost new old songs.


“The abstract-sounding libretto behind Songs of Disconnection oscillates between implication and indifference and explores the intensity that this clash is likely to provoke. The libretto becomes tragic in its unintelligibility, a central notion in my work:
communication only becomes clear when it fails. »
Seghers' motivation is to convert not only their profession, but also themselves and their body into matter. The latter has always been keen to question accepted forms of musical expression.
and interpretation, examining how they can potentially interact, while exploring their alternative states of tension and cohesion. A simple fragment of a mural showing a duck on water was the inspiration for this performance. Behind this serene image, Maarten evokes a context of division and conflict.
Thus began the process of transforming this seed into a lively, collaborative and compelling musical performance.
The title of the piece, Songs of Disconnection, sparked the association
with “Songs of Innocence and Experience” by William Blake,
in which the radical visionary artist explored what he called the “two contrary states of the human soul.”
